SIT in action
District staff are currently rearing mosquitoes. The mosquitoes are then sorted by male/female.
The sorted males receive a dose of radiation which makes them sterile. Sterile males will then be released in areas of infestation to mate with wild females. Females that mate with sterile males lay eggs that do not hatch, decreasing the number of biting mosquitoes and reducing the population over time.
Male mosquitoes do not bite. Releasing male sterile mosquitoes will not increase the number of mosquito bites in a particular area.
The District currently plans to release sterile male mosquitoes in Spring 2024. More details to come.
